Opposition to homes plan grows

OPPOSITION to multi-million pound plans to expand a hotel are mounting.

Last month, Ramside Estates applied to build 34 houses near Ramside Hall Hotel.

Company bosses claim the development is essential to help finance the four-star hotel’s £17million expansion, which includes 44 bedrooms, nine extra golf holes, a 700-capacity banqueting suite and leisure facilities.

But more than 50 residents have objected to the proposal, claiming it will lead to a loss of green space and more traffic on Wantage Road.

Thomas Flower, who has lived on the street for more than 50 years, said: “Durham City is a World Heritage site that we are extremely proud of.

“We want to maintain this and the setting in which it lies, so we want to preserve as much of the rural landscape that we can and not subject it to more urban sprawl.”

Dennis Robinson, also of Wantage road, added: “These houses will look directly down into my bedroom.

“We’re also concerned about the traffic.”

The proposed development would create 104 jobs and an annual economic boost of almost £9million.

Durham County council is expected to consider the application by April.
