Voters in our online poll think we were a more caring society 10 years ago

New research by the charity Action for Happiness has found that almost two thirds of people believe Britain has become less caring in the last decade.

So we asked in our Facebook poll: “Do you think our country was more caring 10 years ago?” At the time of writing, 650 people had voted with 80% saying yes, 20% no.

Lynn Elliott said: “I think there has been a decline in basic manners, eg. please and thank you. A smile costs nothing. Some people just need to get their heads out of their phones and interact with others, without the worry of how many likes or followers you have.”

Arjan Sangha’s thoughts were: “Yep. Me, me, me is everywhere.”

Dave Carter said: “Gradually over the decades, yes. Too many 'I'm Alright Jack’ Tories in the world for my liking.”

Lynne Veitch said: “I think the decline started more than ten years ago with the decline of close knit communities, such as the mining villages. However, there are still many caring people out there. Let’s not forget that.”

Mark Jansen was in the minority, saying: “No, I think people are still just as caring. The leaders have gotten less so.”

Eileen Joyce said: “I think you either care or you don’t. Time has nothing to do with it.”

Craig Jorgensen said: “People don't have time no more that's why. Were all trying to survive these days.”

Chris Higgins perhaps didn’t take the poll seriously, saying: “Should be a ‘Don't care’ option?”
