While Christmas is a joyful time, it’s also that time of year where the number of drink and drug drive arrests almost double compared to any other time of year.

We asked in our recent online poll: “As police forces across the UK prepare to clamp down on drink-drivers throughout the festive period, do you think our legal alcohol limits should be stricter?”

More than 1,100 Echo readers voted online and 82% agreed that the legal limit should be stricter while 18% did not.

Stephen Marshall said: “Zero tolerance. Absolutely no excuse to drink and drive.”

Amanda Ellison said: “The only way you can be sure you are safe to drive is to have zero alcohol in your system.”

Sheila Ann Johnson said: “Should be no alcohol whatsoever when driving.”

“No alcohol whilst driving, simple as that and if you have had a good drink night before – don't drive.”

Tony Isles said: “During the festive season the police concentrate on drivers the next morning.

“You could have got a taxi to and from your work party and done all the right things,

“But get in your car the next morning and trouble.

“Please remember that.”
