Captain Sir Tom, who was 100, died on Tuesday, February 2 after testing positive for Covid-19.

Since then, there have been calls for a lasting public memorial to the war veteran, who raised more than £32million for the NHS in the run-up to this 100th birthday during the first lockdown in spring 2020.

Ideas from Echo readers include a new hospital in his name, a commemorative coin and a bank holiday.

Here are some of your suggestions from the Sunderland Echo Facebook page on how you think Captain Sir Tom’s legacy should be permanently marked:

Elizabeth Warren: "There have been several disabled children inspired to walk like Sir Tom. Perhaps something pertaining to children's rehabilitation or junior Paralympics would be good.

Heather Wood: "There is no doubt the man was a special person, however I believe he would prefer people to donate to the NHS charities rather than spend it on a memorial.”

Tania Smith: “Statue of Sir Tom in every hospital and plaques for every doctors’ surgery, so people can see what a lovely man he was.”

Pat Wesley: "A Sir Tom Moore bank holiday. One day a year that he will always be remembered for many years to come.”

Neil Grieves: "A new hospital built in his name.”
