COMMENT: Those helping feed the hungry are worth their weight in gold

With a lifeline delivery of more than two tonnes of food, MBC Arts & Wellbeing is worth its weight in gold.

The community interest company is one of the many organisations who have stepped up to the plate to help the hungry.

The company’s raison d'etre is to help the community, so when their usual support routes ground to a halt they quickly switched attention to the urgent need for food and cleaning products.

And, as we reveal today, they began applying for suitable funding and were awarded £4,000 by The Barbour Foundation, which was then added to by £500 of products from Bookers in Hendon and another £500 of products from Macro in Washington.

Spokesman Mark Burns Cassell said: "We wanted to access as many areas of the city and working with the foodbanks has allowed us to do that and to make sure the packages go to those who really need it. The food is already going out to people and we’ve had some great feedback.”They are not alone in their community endeavours. We have highlighted a number of groups throughout the area taking practical steps to help the vulnerable, including today with a taxi firm chauffeuring families to the supermarket for free over the half-term school holidays – and paying for their groceries once they get there! Tony O’Donnell, director of Peterlee Executive Cars, modestly says he just wanted to “give something back to the community”.

Everyone doing something positive in these bleak times really are worth their weight in gold - and have hearts to match.
