Clap for Carers: What Echo readers said as 'final' weekly tribute to key workers took place

Echo readers have backed calls for this week’s Clap for Carers to be the final tribute after 10 weeks of applause.

The event has taken place every Thursday since March 26, with millions of families across the UK participating in the tribute in honour of care staff and other frontline workers.

Organiser Annemarie Plas this week said that this week’s Clap – held yesterday on Thursday, May 28 – was likely to be the last as it was ‘good to stop at its peak’.

She also told the PA News Agency she shared the opinion of some that the event was getting ‘politicised’.

We asked in a Facebook poll if you would like to see Clap for Carers continue.

More than 2,500 people took part in the vote with 77% answering no.

This is what you said on the Sunderland Echo Facebook page:

Elizabeth Morrow: “I haven’t clapped, doesn't mean I don't think they're doing a marvellous job, I donate where I can, bought my daughters the NHS rainbow t-shirts, and I follow the lockdown rules, I think that's the best thing we can do for all of the frontline workers, be sensible.”

Angela Wind: “I've clapped every week but one (the week I think I had coronavirus) have loved the camaraderie with my neighbours but think the time had probably come to bow out gracefully.”

Alison Richardson: “Totally agree, have worked for the NHS for 40 years and although it was a lovely thought we are after all just doing our job.”

Marie Wilson: “Yes every week for gratitude. Thank you to NHS.”

Graham Breeze: “Yes it should continue, because this is far from over.”
