In an advertisement in the Echo, Northern Rail boast of installing its “latest innovation in cutting edge in retail technology, the Smart Wall” at Sunderland station.
Yet, immediately above the advertising screen on the main concourse, are two low tech blank screens which are meant to show arrivals and departures. To find this information one has to descend to the platform area or go to the north end entrance.
One of the screens has been out of action for about 10 years due to a “technical problem”, but the other was working until five months ago.
It is surprising that Northern Rail cannot repair a “low-tech” problem to provide information to customers when it can install “cutting edge retail technology”.
The headquarters of Northern Rail’s parent company Arriva (who also operate Grand Central) are at Doxford Park.
I would invite one of their executives to explain why they cannot provide the same facilities for passengers on the main concourse of their home city as is possible at every other significant station in the country.
