A POLICE officer and a member of constabulary staff will stand trial in the new year after denying assaulting a man in custody.
Sergeant Stephen Harvey and detention officer Michael Mount entered not guilty pleas to two counts each of assault by beating.
The pair are accused of using excessive and unreasonable force against David Healer, 47, while he was in custody at Peterlee Police Station on March 5.
Solicitors for Harvey, 50, of Chester-le-Street, and Mount, 60, of Thornley, entered not guilty pleas on their behalf during a hearing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court, in Middlesbrough.
A trial has been listed for January.
