TWO elderly sisters sparked a rescue operation after they fell backwards on a store’s escalator.

The women, aged 80 and 88, took a tumble in between the first and second floors of Wilkinsons in Fawcett Street, Sunderland, at 12.15pm on Saturday.

Members of staff and other shoppers rushed to their aid, shutting off the moving escalator, while emergency services were called out after it was initially though they were trapped.

The younger sister, who suffered bruising, was helped up while her sibling was put onto a spinal board and given oxygen as she complained of pain in her back.

It is thought she suffered minor injuries and was accompanied by her sister to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment.

Crews spent about 35 minutes helping the women.
