AN elderly man was rescued by firefighters early today after a blaze in his bedroom.

Firefighters from Fulwell, Sunderland Central and Farringdon stations were called to Dame Dorothy Crescent, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, at 1.43am.

They forced entry to the flat, on the seventh floor of the 12-storey building, to rescue an 80-year-old man who was trapped inside.

The fire was confined to the bedroom, which was left damaged by fire and smoke. The rest of the flat was smoke-damaged.

The man was overcome by smoke and taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, where he remains, undergoing treatment.

The cause of the fire is unknown and investigations are ongoing.
