Staff at a hospital have welcomed back a group of former nurses to celebrate a special anniversary reunion.

The group celebrated 50 years since they began their training at Monkwearmouth Hospital which is now part of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, the region’s mental health and disability care provider.

The reunion was organised by former nurses Maureen Watkinson and Sheila Hunter, who began their training as 17-year-olds in 1965 at the hospital, which was then called the Orthopaedic and Accident Hospital.

Hospital service manager Helen Gray, said: “Maureen, Sheila and their former colleagues have given so much to nursing over the years, so we were delighted to help them celebrate their latest reunion with us.”
