This is not America!

We are still getting bellyaching from Labour supporters that Teresa May was not elected as Prime Minister. Since when have we elected Prime Ministers? We do not operate a Presidential system in the UK.

Opposition parties have called for a snap general election after Theresa May was named Prime Minister without a vote from the public.

But May is far from the first unelected prime minister. Since 1990 there have been 14 occasions on which 13 different Prime Ministers have come to power other than through a general election.

David Cameron said there should have been an election called when Labour’s Gordon Brown assumed the role of Prime Minister after Blair was dumped. This was, quite rightly, refused.
