Northern League: Waters and Shaw earn crucial victory for lowly Washington as new boss Richie Latimer starts in style

After a tight, goalless first half, Washington - under new boss Richie Latimer for the first time - started the second period brightly and took the lead when captain Matthew Waters made an excellent run and finished well past goalkeeper Jack Wilson, in the 49th minute.

Chester stayed in the game, but they were sunk on 84 minutes when a long through ball found Gary Shaw in the clear and he smashed the ball past keeper Wilson.

Ryhope CW had to settle for a 3-3 draw at Jarrow Roofing, who stunned the visitors with a last-minute leveller.

Roofing went ahead after just two minutes, when Shaun Vipond tapped home a Chris Winn cross, from close range.

Gary Pearson’s men equalised on 25 minutes through Kyle Davis, when he volleyed home into the top corner, but the home side regained the lead when ex-Ryhope frontman Winn slotted the ball under keeper Jonny Ball.

Ryhope came roaring back in the second half and James Ellis equalised in the 63rd minute. The ex-Brandon flier then made it 3-2, when he scored with ease after finding himself unmarked in the box on 80 minutes.

However, in the last minute, recent Roofing signing Paul Gardiner made it 3-3, when he reacted first to head the ball home, following a flick-on at the near post from a corner.

Seaham Red Star enjoyed a fine 3-1 win at West Allotment Celtic.

Their bright start was rewarded when Nick Kane fired a 25-yard shot past keeper Chris Bannon, in the seventh minute.

Just before half time, Craig Lynch made it 2-0, when he fired under Bannon.

West Allotment reduced the deficit in the 70th minute, when Craig Hindmarch scored, but Lynch cut in from the right five minute later and fired a fine strike into the corner of the net to see victory.

West Auckland and Ashington drew 2-2, though the game only really came alive in the last 10 minutes.

Sub Kyle Downey lobbed goalkeeper Gareth Shaw to put the visitor ahead, but a superb finish by Darren Richardson soon levelled it up.

Ashington regained the lead on 89 minutes when a clever David Dormand header found the far corner of the net, but West were not to be outdone and, in the 92nd minute, Adam Burnicle turned a Phil Caley cross past Connor Grant to make it 2-2.

Bishop Auckland slumped 4-0 at Marske United, with Aaron Ramsbottom (2), Reece Kelly and Nathan Mulligan, scoring after his penalty was saved, doing the damage.

Durham City drew level with Division Two leaders Team Northumbria after winning away to the Tynesiders.

The winning goal came on 15 minutes. Kieran Harnett scored easily after the home keeper was closed down well and the deflected ball fell to his feet and he smashed it in.

Easington Colliery were held 0-0 by Hebburn Town in a tough battle of fifth v sixth.

Home keeper Kyle Donaldson made a great save to deny Adam Rundle, pushing his drive against the post and to safety.

Channon North and Dan Reeves went close for Hebburn before Aidan Goodey almost gave Easington the lead, his 30-yard free-kick clipping the bar.

Hebburn had to defend strongly to deny Easington before Donaldson made a good save from Alan Pegram. Hebburn keeper Steve Hubery’s fine stop denied Easington a late winner.

Bottom club Esh Winning lost 2-1 to Bedlington Terriers, who were two up in 20 minutes, thanks to Liam Clark and Tyler Scarth. Lee Best pulled one back before Esh keeper Mark Fish saved a Bedlington penalty.

Second-top Billingham Synthonia were hammered 4-1 at Heaton Stannington, after leading with a Conor Winter strike.

Dean Deagle, Dan Robinson, Dean Imray and Lee Johnson sealed the Synners’ fate.

Mark Wood netted for Crook Town, but they lost 2-1 to Northallerton, while a floodlight failure forced Tow Law to abandon their home clash with Thornaby at half-time.
