Northern League: Mechanics mauled by Mackay hat-trick as Roofing storm to victory

A first-half Michael Mackay hat-trick helped Richie McLoughlin and Mark Collingwood’s Roofing extend their unbeaten run to five.

The home side took the lead on 11 minutes after some great work from Chris Winn on the right ended with a square ball for Mackay to tap in.

Six minutes later, Mackay bagged his second with a stunning solo strike as he cut in from the left and smashed the ball home.

Washington’s best chance of the half came when Jake Fowler played a neat one-two but could only fire wide.

The visitors had another great opportunity in the 21st minute as Jake Pickard met Fowler’s free-kick, but the header was dealt with easily by keeper Lewis Brass.

Mackay completed his hat-trick just before half-time, rounding keeper Cameron Metcalfe to coolly slot home.

The second half was scrappy, but the outstanding Winn made it four, sliding in to finish off Paul Chow’s high ball into the area.

In Division Two, Tow Law Town claimed a good 1-1 draw at home to Blyth Town.

Dean Thexton put them ahead after 37 minutes, but sub Malcolm Morien poked an equaliser past keeper Michael Allan on the hour mark.

Third-top Billingham Synthonia boosted their promotion push, winning 3-2 at lowly Darlington RA, thanks to goals from Conor Winter, Dale Mulligan and Macaulay Langstaff, with a 35-yard stunner.

Joe Peel and Andrew Lonsdale responded for second-bottom RA.

In the Evo-Stik League’s Premier Division, leaders Blyth Spartans ended a two-game losing run by thumping Frickley Athletic 5-1.

Luke Armstrong (2), Robbie Dale, who earlier missed a penalty, Sean Reid and Matty Pattison notched to delight a Croft Park crowd of 587.

Spennymoor Town lost 2-1 at Whitby Town, with James Curtis’s header sandwiched by strikes from Dale Hopson (penalty) and Michael Roberts, in stoppage time.
