North East weather: Chilly showers on the way as cold snap continues

Last week's snow and ice may be a distant memory, but the cold weather is here to stay for a little while longer.

Met Office forecast for the North East of England predicts showery rain, sleet and hill snow in some places over the next day or two.

And it's definitely time to dig out those hats, gloves and scarves if you haven't already because there's going to be an icy chill in the air.

Tonight, the skies will be cloudy with some light rain of sleet, depending on localised temperatures, but by morning there will be a frost and freezing fog.

The region's minimum temperature for overnight is expected to be -4 °C.

Thursday's forecast states: "Any freezing fog clearing slowly with some sunny intervals developing. However, increasing cloud will bring patchy light rain or sleet in the afternoon, perhaps with a little hill snow."

Daytime temperatures tomorrow will not rise above 5°C.

Milder weather is expected to arrive at the weekend with rain on Friday, dry conditions on Saturday and more rain on Sunday. The sun will have his hat on, for a short time at least, on Saturday too so we better make the most of it!
