SUNDERLAND city councillors will not receive an increase in their allowances next year.

Members allowances will remain at their existing levels after cabinet members rubber stamped a report from the Interdependent Remuneration Panel.

The panel recommended that both basic and special responsibility allowances stay the same for 2015/16.

The decision comes after last year’s recommendation saw the council adopt an increase in the deputy mayor’s allowance from £3,827 to £5,735, due to the number of visits and events attached to the role.

Last year, the previously unpaid post of member of the adoption panel also became subject to a special responsibility allowance of £4,184.

Prior to the panel’s decision, it considered a number of representations from councillors.
