There are problems with some GP phone lines in the North East due to flooding at the BT exchange in York.

An NHS spokesman has confirmed that there are problems with some of the lines in the South Tyneside and Sunderland areas, as well as in Gateshead.

They said: "We’re currently experiencing problems with some of the phone lines in the Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland area. This is due to the recent flooding at BT’s York exchange.

"We’re working hard with our communication companies to resolve this problem as quickly as we can."

Patients are being advised to contact NHS 111 if they experience any difficulties in contacting the GP, or accessing any other services.
