ELECTRICITY cables leading to the centre of Durham City will be upgraded in the New Year.

Engineers say the cables carrying the supply to the many businesses in Market Place are decrepit and badly in need of replacement.

The work will involve laying 200m of new cable along Elvet Bridge.

Northern Powergrid say they have discussed the work with Durham County Council, and it has been agreed to start the £100,000 project in January to avoid disrupting the busy run-up to Christmas.
