A NEW operator linking the North East to one of Germany’s main cities has taken to the air.
Germanwings, part of the Lufthansa Group, has introduced flights from Newcastle to Dusseldorf, after taking over the service from its parent company.
The carrier will operate the same service as Lufthansa, daily except Saturday.
Newcastle Aviation development director Chris Sanders, said: “We are delighted at the arrival of Germanwings who, operating as a low-cost carrier, will bring a new pricing structure, and we expect will become a popular way of reaching Germany from Newcastle.
“Dusseldorf Airport is very well connected to the German rail system, which means the route can be used to access most of Germany.
“We believe this service will be especially popular for leisure travellers who want to get out and about and explore the best of what Germany has to offer.”
Heinz Joachim Schöttes, Germanwings senior vice-president corporate communications, said: “We are delighted to launch this new connection from Newcastle Airport to Dusseldorf.
“Newcastle is an important destination for us and this new route makes both locations more accessible for both German and UK business travellers, as well as holiday-makers.”
