Sunderland City Council’s Tory group has elected Coun Peter Wood as its new leader – taking over from former Councillor Lee Martin.
Coun Wood, who was re-elected to St Michael’s, will be deputised by ward colleague Coun Michael Dixon.
“As the main opposition group on the council our task is, clearly, to hold the large Labour majority to account,” Coun Wood said. “Under our leadership that opposition will be constructive. Yes, we will expose wasteful spending by Labour. But we will also always put the interests of the city first and will be more than willing to make common cause with Labour members in representations to the Conservative Government aimed at improving the quality of life of the people of Sunderland.
“We may be a small team of councillors but the group contains much expertise. In Shirley Leadbitter we have a frontline NHS worker. There is also experience in both housing and education.”
