THE new Bishop of Durham visited Buckingham palace to pay homage to the Queen.

The Right Rev Paul Butler, pictured, who takes on his new role at Durham Cathedral later this month, followed tradition by taking an oath acknowledging Her Majesty The Queen as Sovereign and Supreme Governor.

The oath signifies the last formal step on the journey of becoming Bishop of Durham.

Bishop Paul will have his inauguration of Public Ministry (Enthronement) in Durham Cathedral on Saturday February 22 at a public service of welcome to the Diocese.

He will also take part in the ancient Falchion Ceremony on Croft Bridge, in Darlington on Friday February 21.

His appointment comes after his predecessor Justin Welby was selected as the new Archbishop of Canterbury.
