THE new Bishop of Durham was named this morning – on Ascension Day, one of the most important days in the Christian calendar.
Dean of Liverpool, the Very Reverend Justin Portal Welby, will succeed the Right Reverend Nicholas Thomas Wright when he stands down at the end of August.
“To become Bishop of Durham is a huge privilege for many reasons,” he said.
“It is an ancient diocese, going way back before England itself existed.
“Bishops of Durham stand on the shoulders of some of the greatest Christians that Europe has produced, from the seventh century to the 21st.
“Because of the heritage and the strength of the area, to be a good bishop here is about as challenging as it gets.“
Mr Welby trained for the ministry at St John’s College, Durham, after leaving a career in the oil industry in Paris and London.
