'This must never happen again' - Sunderland MP welcomes Margaret Byrne's decision to quit

Sunderland Central MP Julie Elliott was among those who said the club had questions to answer over the decision to continue playing Adam Johnson after he was charged with sex offences in relation to a girl under 16.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to two charges, and was found guilty of another, at Bradford Crown Court last week.

Margaret Byrne today resigned over the case, after it was revealed had been given evidence showing what Johnson had admitted to police. The club has issued an apology and promised a review.

Ms Elliott said: "I welcome the statements issued this afternoon from both SAFC and Margaret Byrne.

"I think that it is the right decision that Margaret leaves the club and I welcome the news that the club has undertaken a full review of decision-making processes to ensure that this never happens again.

"We must not forget that it is the criminal actions of Mr Johnson that have led us to this day. My thoughts are very much with the victim as she rebuilds her life."
