Murton quit Wearside League as South Shields Reserves, Windscale clinch places
Murton withdrew from the TWR Bi Folds Wearside League at last night's 125th AGM after just one season back.
The loss of Murton, champions Stockton Town (promoted to the Northern League) and Whitehaven (joining the West Lancs League), was countered by the election of South Shields Reserves and Windscale, while relegated Stokesley SC have returned from the Northern League.
That keeps the league at 20 clubs for the 2016-17 season.
Murton struggled from the start on their return from life in the Durham Alliance League and they secured only one win and three draws in 38 league games to finish 20 points adrift at the bottom.
A league statement read: “The league was shocked to be told that Murton was not to contest their re-election.”
At the AGM, league chairman Peter Maguire presented a cheque for £1,000 to the ward sister of Roker Ward at Monkwearmouth Hospital and hospital manager Helen Grey following money raised last season.
Prizes were presented to leading goalscorer Andrew Jennings, who hit 45 goals for Redcar Athletic, and Stockton Town keeper Michael Arthur, who was awarded the Golden Gloves award.
Marshall Lawson (Annfield Plain), Kevin Oliver (Boldon CA), Kevin Gibson (Harton & Westoe), Jimmy Kane (Jarrow) and Andrew McElvaney (Redcar) were re-elected to the league management committee, with David Steele (Silksworth) and David Copeland (Seaham Red Star) elected to fill the vacancies.
