Mums splash the cash

The Echo reported that Sunderland has a taste for eating out.

Well, I eat out a lot, usually breakfasts or lunches, but there’s one thing that bothers me, toddlers.

Wherever I go there are young mothers with toddlers, or grannies with toddlers. Toddlers screaming, running about, kicking furniture or throwing food about.

Now, I hear you say: What’s wrong with you, you grumpy old grouch? They’re only bairns.

Only bairns! Two words that cover a wide range of antisocial behaviour.

Why don’t they teach the bairns table manners? If you are eating out, you can’t behave like you do at home.

I thought we were living in an age of austerity, but I see groups of mothers, dragging their offspring behind them, meet up every day and spend huge sums on coffees and teas, with beans on toast for the bairns.

If your bairn likes beans try cooking them at home and see how much money you’ll save. Then I can eat my dinner in peace.

When I think how mam use to struggle to feed us in the post-war years, that really was an age of austerity.

What would she make of the mothers of today, throwing money away on drinks they could make at home?
