The 37-year-old woman was riding along Providence Row, Durham City, down a steep bank towards the Sands area when the incident happened.

It is understood that as she came round a bend, she lost control of the green coloured bike and fell to the ground, suffering serious head injuries.

Her son, who was strapped into the child seat, also received head injuries when the bike crashed, at about 10.15am on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: “The alarm was raised by a passing driver who saw the aftermath, but not the actual accident itself.”

The pair, who are from from Durham City, were rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, where their condition is described as “poorly but stable”.
