CLAIMS the River Wear is one of Britain’s most improved have been welcomed by an MP.
The river was highlighted with nine others across for shrugging off their industrial past to become havens for wildlife, walkers and anglers.
The improvement has been put down to habitat improvement projects, tighter regulation of polluting industries and work with nearby farms to reduce the amount of pollution and improve water quality.
Durham MP Roberta Blackman-Woods said: “I am absolutely delighted to hear that the River Wear has recently been named by the Environment Agency as one of the most improved in England.
“The Wear is a key part of the North East’s regional identity and its transformation into a clean and thriving river is a wonderful boost to the region.”
