A motorbike was set ablaze in a suspected arson attack.
Firefighters from South Shields station were called to Sea View Park, in Whitburn, at around 11.45pm yesterday to reports of a fire.
A motorbike, parked at the side of a house, had been set alight and flames spread to the house, damaging the guttering and causing the occupants - a father and son - to flee the property.
It is thought the fire was started deliberately.
A spokesman for the fire service said: "The fire spread to the house and affected the guttering and the garage and the two occupants - a father and son - were self-rescued prior to us getting there.
"We'll be out in the area today carrying out a hot strike, meaning we'll be doing fire safety checks and making sure people have working alarms and the necessary life-saving skills they need in case of a fire."
Police were also on scene and inquires are ongoing into the cause of the blaze.
