More women joining jobless queue

THE number of people looking for work on Wearside rose slightly last month – with women bearing the brunt of the downturn.

There were 9,651 people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in Sunderland on February 10, up just 21 from the previous month.

But the sexes fared differently, with a small drop in the number of male claimants more than wiped out by a rise in the number of women receiving the benefit.

Male Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants fell from 6,750 to 6,682, but women on the benefit jumped from 2,880 to 2,969.
