More travel disruption is expected today between Sunderland and Newcastle.
Northern Rail trains are experiencing disruption in both directions due to engineering work required to repair the overhead line.
Services will run in both directions on a single line track instead of two, causing delays.
The line will be closed from 9pm until the start of service tomorrow while Network Rail engineers work overnight to return the line to train operators.
The last trains to operate tonight will be from Middlesbrough to Hexham (Divert via Eaglescliffe) at 9.10pm and Newcastle to Middlesbrough (Divert via East Coast Mainline) at 9.18pm.
Alternative transport will run between Newcastle and Middlesbrough calling at all stations missed by the services above, which are Stockton, Billingham, Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, Seaham, Sunderland, and Heworth.
