An 800 metre section of the busy A1231 Wessington Way commuter route in the city will be reduced to one lane in each direction either side of the Sainsbury’s roundabout from the early hours of Monday morning.

The lane closures will be in place for most of 2016 and are essential to allow for the Sainsbury’s roundabout to be changed into a junction and for the construction of the approach road to the new bridge.

Also starting next week, there will be temporary traffic lights from Wednesday 17 February through to Friday 19 February on part of the route through Sunderland Enterprise Park near to DW Fitness. This short section of the main route through the Enterprise Park will then be closed on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February.

Sunderland Enterprise Park will remain open throughout the works.

When it opens in 2018, the new bridge will cross the River Wear between Wessington Way in Castletown and European Way in Pallion.

It will have two lanes of traffic in each direction plus dedicated cycleways and footpaths.

It is the first bridge to be built over the Wear in the city for more than 40 years and is part of the wider strategic transport plan to link the Port of Sunderland and city centre to the A19 and A1. It will also attract new jobs and investment to Sunderland and help regenerate the area.
