A GIANT mobile is hanging in an industrial warehouse in Sunderland as part of an intriguing public art project.
Artist Cerith Wyn Evans has been in the city to unveil his piece, Permit Yourself.., which hangs at Unit 91, at Alexandra Business Park, in Pallion.
It will be in place for the next four weeks and features different-sized double mirrors with text intricately cut out of each panel.
Cerith, who visited the city earlier this year for inspiration, chose the spot because he is interested in post–industrial spaces.
He said: “I’m thrilled to be part of this whole project and enjoyed looking round Sunderland.
“Here, like so much of the country, is filled with massive post-industrial spaces.
“They are ghost spaces and I’ve found these interesting to look at because no-one really knows what to do with them.”
Great North Run Culture and Locus+ commissioned the piece, which is part of the Cultural Olympiad, a cultural celebration of the true spirit of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
