A MINUTE’S applause will ring out across the Stadium of Light in memory of Mr Mandela tomorrow.

Sunderland AFC is a Legacy Advocate for Nelson Mandela Foundation – the only football club in the world to form such a partnership.

Flags are flying at half-mast at the Stadium of Light in a show of respect and Sunderland’s players will wear black armbands at this afternoon’s game.

A minute’s applause will be held at all Premier League grounds, in recognition of the life of the former South African President.

SAFC players, officials and the Stadium of Light crowd will join in tribute to Mr. Mandela at today’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur

SAFC chief executive Margaret Byrne said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Mandela, a truly great man. The thoughts of everyone at Sunderland AFC are with the family of Mr Mandela, our friends and colleagues at the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the people of South Africa.”

On Twitter SAFC players joined in the tributes.

Alfred N’diaye tweeted: “RIP Nelson Mandela big, big man a hero” and Carlos Cuellar said: “Shoot down and destroy is easy. Heroes are those who build and work for the peace. RIP Mandela.”
