Mini Mania hits Sunderland as car enthusiasts brave the weather

Enthusiasts from across the North East and further afield took part in the event, held by North East Mini Club.

Although organisers had hoped for a bigger turn-out and brighter weather, there was still plenty of cars to look at and fun to be had.

There were prizes up for grabs including, best classic, modern and car of the show, at the 12th such event at Seaburn Recreation Ground.

Entertainment was provided by disabled musicians of The Pantastic Steel Band from Grindon.

Mandy MacBeth, 45, from Castletown, said about Minis: “They are fun. They are quirky. I think you either love them or hate them.

“They can be fast, and I think a lot of younger people are starting to like them. We are getting younger members all the time, as well as other generations.

Stacey Craig, 27, from Houghton, recently moved out of her parents’ house, which at one point had seven Minis parked outside.

Asked why she loves her Mini, she said: “It’s comfortable to drive and eye-catching.

“Mine is 14 years old now but still looks brand new. It’s still got a tape player in and looks great.”
