A BIKE club which helps youngsters get in the saddle has been given an honour.

The Bike Wise mini club, which has been created by Durham County Council and Durham Police, gives youngsters aged six to 17 opportunities to ride mini bikes lawfully and safely.

The scheme has now been given the Chairman’s Medal by Councillor Dennis Morgan.

Coun Morgan said: “The Bike Wise success has much to do with it being run by volunteers in their own time.

“It was the first and now the longest-running club in the UK to be licensed by the Auto Cycle Union, which now insures each club event.”

New members at the mini bikes club all receive training in riding the vehicles from police officers.

Riders must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
