Mike Ashley says Newcastle United is NOT for sale – at any price – until the club wins something.

The relegation-threatened club’s billionaire owner today gave his first-ever interview.

Ashley was speaking to Sky Sports ahead of this afternoon’s game against West Ham United at St James’s Park, after which there is a protest planned against the sportswear magnate.

Asked about his ambitions for Newcastle, which last won a major trophy in 1969, he said: “It’s definitely to win something, and by the way I shan’t be selling it until I do.”

Ashley added that the club was not for sale “at any price”.

The Sports Direct owner went on: “We’ve put the club on a very sound financial footing, so we are able to spend and punch above our weight.”

Ashley said the decision on appointing a permanent successor to Alan Pardew would rest with managing director Lee Charnley and the club’s board.
