There is also interest from Asia in securing the 31-year-old’s signature but speaking to the Swedish press, agent Per Jonsson has said Larsson will see the season out at the Stadium of Light after his return to fitness from a knee injury.

Larsson returned to training three months earlier than expected after undergoing surgery in the summer to treat medial ligament damage in his knee.

The midfielder has since made three appearances for the Under-23 side, including in Monday night’s 2-0 win over Manchester United.

Larsson has long been linked with a move back to Sweden but his agent insists any talk about future plans are on hold.

Jonsson said: “There is Swedish and foreign interest in Sebastian in every transfer window, so it’s been a long time.

“There is interest from both the [Swedish] league and Asia for Seb, but we have not received any bids, simply because he now quite categorically wants to concentrate on finishing the season and now, for the first time in two years, he feels perfectly healthy.”

Larsson, out of contract in the summer, played his latest comeback game in the win over Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village, the midfielder playing alongside Jan Kirchhoff, who is edging closer to a first team return after a hamstring injury.

Both got on the scoresheet too for the Under-23s, though Larsson’s goal came via a deflection.

Their return to fitness is a welcome boost to manager David Moyes after the injury suffered by Paddy McNair. The Northern Ireland international looks set to miss the rest of the season after rupturing his cruciate ligament.
