Michael Bowers: Sunderland are capable of beating Leicester City - and it shouldn't be an upset

I cannot believe I am writing that sentence.

Last season they needed a great escape to stay up and were in the Championship the year before.

Before I go further, I will say that if they do win the league it’s an unbelievable achievement and will be one of the biggest ever stories in football, if not the biggest.

Credit to them and their fans deserve to enjoy the ride as I’m sure they are.

However, they’re not Real Madrid or Barcelona. They’ve done brilliantly but they’re not unbeatable.

Will it be a hard game on Sunday? Without question and they’ll definitely be more ambitious than West Brom were but this is a team I’d expect Sunderland to be competing with during the 90 minutes.

If we keep Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante quiet we have a chance to win the game.

One of Leicester’s biggest strengths this season is their ability to play as a team and that deserves applause.

But have they got any world-beaters in their team? No.

Why can’t Sunderland, at home in front of a bumper crowd, beat them?

I’m expecting a very tough game but Sunderland winning on Sunday - without any disrespect to Leicester - shouldn’t be an upset.

Were they expected to be top at the start of the season? No. I expected them to go down actually or at best be bottom half of the table.

The title is theirs to lose.

Them being seven points clear may in fact help Sunderland because, although they’ll not say this to the press or in public, they will subconsciously feel they can afford to drop points.

With this game being at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland can also use the crowd to help guide them to three points.

If we go in front, we need to see it out this time.

Leicester still have players to hurt us so we need to 100 per cent concentration from Sam Allardyce’s side at ALL times during the game.

Let’s hope we can better Norwich City’s result.
