Metro versus car in rush-hour race from South Tyneside to Sunderland

Have your say

COMMUTERS can cheer on their favourite mode of transport in a Top Gear-inspired challenge next week.

The My Metro challenge will see a member of the public drive from South Tyneside to Sunderland city centre in a car while a Metro train sets off on the same journey, both during rush hour.

The finishing line will be The Bridges to see which way is the quickest to commute.

Sharon Kelly, customer services director at Metro operator DB Regio, said: “Commuting to work can be a stressful start to your day and many people differ in opinions about which method is the quickest, most cost effective and convenient way to travel.

“My Metro Challenge aims to demonstrate once and for all, which mode of transport can work best for you.

“There are a number of factors which can affect the timing of both a Metro and car journey, from traffic jams on the roads to the number of people getting on and off a Metro, so it will be interesting to see which one wins.”

The race will start at Fellgate Metro station at 8.20am on Tuesday and travel towards Sunderland Metro station.

The time taken by each mode of transport will determine the winner of the challenge. Both journeys will be filmed in case of any delays or traffic jams.
