METRO trains were suspended in both directions between Heworth and Gateshead Stadium after a train got tangled up with the over head line.

Engineers are investigating whether the hot weather may have caused the overhead line to sag, causing the pantograph – used to power the train – to get caught.

The service was suspended following the incident at 1.10pm on Friday and the service was restored shortly after 4.30pm.

A Metro spokesman said: “We are investigating whether heat was a factor.”
