Metro passengers face fourth day of service problems: Engineers will work overnight in repair bid

Trains have been knocked out on the stretch between Pelaw and Brockley Whins all week due to a power outage on the Sunderland line.

The problems and delays in repairs have caused a major headache for commuters - and provoked an angry response from passengers and politicians.

Metro bosses have now released a further statement - but are still unable to confirm if services will be back in full operation tomorrow.

In a statement, Metro said: "We’re very sorry if you’ve been affected by the ongoing service disruption between Pelaw and Brockley Whins.

"Network Rail engineers will be working on the line overnight tonight, repairing and replacing cabling in an attempt to restore power to the line. We will know overnight whether this has been successful and will update with the latest information when we have it.

"Meanwhile, passengers in the affected area are advised to use the replacement bus 900 which is calling at Heworth, Pelaw, Fellgate and Brockley Whins.

"Valid Metro tickets can also be used on Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland."
