Metro disruption after bridge is hit by vehicle

Metro services between East Boldon and Pelaw were suspended for more than an hour today after a lorry hit a bridge on the line.

North East Live Traffic Tweeted: "Police are attending a report of a goods vehicle having struck a bridge on the A194 Leam Lane in #Monkton."

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “Shortly before 13:30, a member of the public reported that a HGV had struck a rail bridge on Leam Lane in Fellgate.

"Network Rail engineers visited the site and carried out an inspection of the bridge. Train services in the area were held while this took place.

"Services have now resumed.

"We’d like to thank anyone who was affected by this incident for their patience while we worked to resolve it."

A Nexus spokesman said: "Metro services have now resumed between Pelaw and Brockley Whins.

"We got the all clear to resume from Network Rail at 2.46pm."
