Metal theft causes Seaham power cut

AN ESTATE was hit by a power cut after a metal cover from a electricity junction was stolen.

Firefighters were called to reports of sparks coming from an open drain in Malvern Crescent, Deneside, Seaham.

They found the metal cover of the underground junction had been taken, with the sparks caused by water seeping in to the wires.

The crew, which was called out at 8pm on Saturday, secured the area.

NEDL dealt with the fault, although the job was made more difficult because rubbish had been thrown into the hole.

The firm’s engineer asked for a police presence as he carried out work because a group of youths had gathered nearby.

The electricity supply had to be cut off to homes in the area for more than two hours as repairs were made, with a delay caused because the engineer had to wait for a replacement cast iron cover to arrive.
