NORTH East Euro MPs have backed changes to cut costs for holidaymakers using mobiles abroad.

New roaming charges limits set in the European Parliament mean calls will cost no more than 28p per minute, while the cap on SMS charges is down to 8p per message.

There will also be a cap on charges for download information from the internet.

Lib Dem MEP Fiona Hall said: “Being able to use your mobile phone is now a vital part of any holiday or business trip, so it’s great news that people will be able to do so without fear of a massive bill waiting for them at home.”

Labour MEP Stephen Hughes said: “The mobile phone companies have been ripping off holidaymakers from the North East for too long.

“This week’s vote will bring prices down considerably. Brits travelling abroad this summer will really feel the difference in their pocket.”
