Making the most of the rising popularity of gourmet burgers, Fat Hippo opened its first branch in Jesmond, Newcastle, in 2010 and soon earned a cult following.

It opened a second restaurant, Hippo Underground, in Shakespeare Street in Newcastle city centre.

The chain says its specialises in a ‘good kind of gluttony’ with burger toppings such as peanut butter and bacon jam and deep fried gherkins.

A spokeswoman said: “Every burger is ground, weighed, and pressed by hand on a daily basis, so we can ensure a consistently good burger, every time. And we serve them fresh off the grill, pink and juicy, as they should be.”
