THE Mayoress of Peterlee has stepped down from her role as councillor.

Margaret Milsom will still support her husband, Coun Don Milsom in his capacity as Mayor of Peterlee Town Council, as Mayoress Consort.

Mrs Milsom, who represented Labour on the Passfield ward for a number of years, did not wish to comment.

Celia Baty, a Labour councillor for the Dene House ward, has stepped down as deputy mayor, but will remain a councillor.

Coun George Cowie, a Labour representative for the town’s Howletch ward, who has over 30 years service, will step in as deputy mayor.

Councillor Bill Jeffrey, spokesman of the majority political party (Labour) on the council, confirmed the changes and said there would be a by-election for the Passfield ward, announced shortly.
