The North East Restoration club held a classic and vintage vehicle rally at its site on the Pattinson Industrial Estate.

The gathering was such a hit that enthusiasts were forced to leave their treasured vehicles outside after the show field filled to overflowing.

“We had to shut the gates, there were too many on the field,” said honorary president Keith Noble.

“It has been so successful this year that some people have had to wait outside and come in as paying guests.

“You organise everything – the publicity, the leaflets, the catering, but the weather is the one thing you can’t plan for.”

The club has been running for more than 40 years but has really take off in the last decade and a half.

“We were founded in 1971 and we have had this building since 1973,” said Keith.

“About 15 years ago, we were able to purchase the building and the land and we have just gone from strength to strength since. Membership is now up to around 200.

“In the workshop, we have got 26 long-term restoration bays and four short-term bays that people can lease for one to eight weeks.

“Our oldest vehicle is a 1912 Humber.”

Among those taking part was David Warren, with his 50-year-old Scammel Scarab truck.

“Keeping it on the road isn’t as expensive as you might think,” he said.

“If you keep on top of it and do it in dribs and drabs, it’s OK.”
