FANS’ favourite Martin O’Neill is in advanced talks to sign as Sunderland’s new manager.
O’Neill, a Black Cats fan since his youth, is expected to finalise the deal following negotiations with club owner Ellis Short and Niall Quinn.
It comes less than 48 hours after Sunderland parted company with Steve Bruce following a string of disappointing results.
The Ulsterman will end 15 months in the managerial wilderness in a bid to boost the fortunes of the flagging side.
O’Neill is the club’s first choice although Mark Hughes was also considered for the vacancy.
