Dutchman Advocaat claimed last week that Sunderland would be a stronger team, if they were able to rebuild away from the Premier League.

But O’Neill – one of Advocaat’s predecessors in the Stadium of Light hotseat – says he doesn’t agree that the Wearsiders would benefit from being relegated to the Championship, like Newcastle United have.

Instead, O’Neill has warned the Black Cats that there is no guarantees that they would come straight back up if they were relegated this season.

“In terms of dropping down a division, you know what, you start dropping down divisions and there is no guarantee you’ll come back up – regardless of the money you spend,” he said on Talksport.

“My own view is always that if you are in the big league, stay in it.”
