Countless star performers have also appeared at the Empire Theatre and the now demolished Mecca Centre, in Newcastle Road, at its variously named Locarno Ballroom and Mayfair Suite.

The band were one of the most popular acts in the country at the time on the back of 1979 number two single Oliver's Army and other major hits such as Accidents Will Happen and Watching the Detectives.
